Proposed restrictions on short term rentals inhibits our rights as landlords and property owners. Enforcing a limit of leaseable days (i.e. 29 days) hinders the use of platforms like AirBnb or VRBO. These platforms are common sources of income and tactics , used by many local property owners, to curb vacancy and stay ahead of an ever evolving rental market in Tompkins County.

As in a college town, there is often a shortage of hotel rooms during high traffic weekends. Short term rentals provide an alternative to the average hotel/motel reservation and can provide visitors with a beneficial community-wide experience that is often missed when staying at the expected hotel chain. Many local businesses also thrive off the influx of traffic as well. AirBnB or VRBO makes it easier for travelers to rent a desirable spot that is not the average hotel room.

A desired solution to this proposed legislation would be to require short term rentals be held to the same standard as the long-term, residential units. They would be required to register their rental, be inspected for safety, etc.

The local economy, property owners, and community would be negatively affected by these proposed restrictions and regulations. Your reconsideration is necessary.
