Take Action: Proposed new County office building. February 2019

Take Action: To limit the size of a proposed new County office building downtown and to retain the character of the adjoining neighborhood.

The large lot between N. Tioga St and Sears Street is for sale and will be developed. The Tompkins County Legislature is considering consolidating their offices, buying this lot and building at this location.

Members of the LATC are being asked to support the Cascadilla Creek Neighborhood Association’s goals of protecting and preserving the character of one of Ithaca's oldest and most unique neighborhoods


The development site is considered a single lot, but Sears St is zoned R-2b and the Tioga St side is designated Court House Special Use District and Local Historic District.

Our goal is to retain the existing R-2b zoning and encourage similar owner-occupied homes to be built on Sears St., and to restrict the Tioga St commercial building to not more than three stories in height.  We believe this could be acceptable for the neighborhood if the building is of suitable and appropriate size for the location, and if owner-occupied homes are included in the plan, protecting this transitional neighborhood.

The LATC asks its members to sign this Take Action petition, which will be sent to the appropriate local governmental representatives.
